"Breaking the Boundaries"


The 17th Annual Atlantic Women in Law Enforcement (AWLE) Conference will be held in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, October 20-23, 2009 at the Holiday Inn Express, hosted by the members of the law enforcement agencies of Pictou County. The theme for this year’s conference is “Breaking the Boundaries”.

The itinerary includes numerous speakers from Canada and the United States including: Keynote Speaker Dr. Dorothy Schulz, author of “Breaking the Brass Ceiling” and Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, USA; Dr. Marnie Wood, Forensic Pathologist, Medical Examiner Service for Halifax, will present on Excited Delerium and Effects of Tasers ; Cpl. Annie Neilson, A/Sr. Collision Reconstructionist, Sgt. Scott Sawyer and Cst. Yves Allain of the Bathurst RCMP will speak on “The Bathurst High School Basketball Team Motor Vehicle Fatality”. Additional Conference speakers include: Sgt. Kevin Scott of the New Glasgow Police Service who will discuss Critical Incident Stress, and Dr. Ed Strok, PhD Psychology, Hypnotechnician of the Kentville Mental Health Centre.

The conference includes a parade of uniformed members through downtown New Glasgow with a stop at the scenic Carmichael Park for a group photo.

AWLE will honor outstanding female officers with the presentation of major awards at the annual Awards Banquet. Award nomination forms are now available on the website. Deadline for award nominations is September 11, 2009.

Accommodations are at the new Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, 86 Lawrence Boulevard, Stellarton. The Holiday Inn Express offers a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast, indoor pool with waterslide and hot tub, fitness facility and business centre. The hotel is located minutes off of the Trans Canada Highway 104 at Exit 24 and the fee starts at $119 plus tax for conference guests.
